Man accused of kidnapping, robbing 4 church missionaries in Utah

WEST JORDAN — A man is accused of kidnapping four church missionaries Friday night after he forced them at gunpoint to walk to a gas station to get money when they told him they had none, police said.

According to West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts, around 9:30 p.m. Friday an intoxicated man approached four missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near an apartment complex at 3700 W. 7100 South and asked them for money.

After the missionaries told the man they did not have any, he allegedly became insistent and demanding, brandishing a knife and a gun, Roberts said. The man then forced the missionaries to walk to the Exxon Gas Station at 3731 West Jordan Landing Blvd. to retrieve some money. One of the missionaries made a purchase in order to get cash back to give to the man.

Roberts said one of the missionaries was able to text a friend as they were being forced to walk to the gas station, and that friend contacted police who then responded to the area.

Police arrested 25-year-old Michael Willie at the gas station and took him into custody for investigation of aggravated robbery, possession of a concealed dangerous weapon and kidnapping, Roberts said.

The missionaries were not injured in this incident.
