Communities gather to honor fallen officer Joseph Shinners

OREM — People were filing into the Utah Community Credit Union Center at Utah Valley University Saturday to honor the life of Master Officer Joseph Shinners, a Provo police officer who was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 5.

Shinners, 29, was shot while trying to apprehend 40-year-old Matt Frank Hoover, a fugitive who was armed. Hoover had two outstanding warrants when Shinners encountered him behind a store in Orem last Saturday night.

The two each fired one shot and Shinners died from his injuries at a hospital.

Earlier this week, Gov. Gary Herbert said “we certainly appreciate those men and women in uniform who go out there, and every day go out the door, to serve and protect and know that they may not be coming home.”

The three-year veteran at the Provo Police Department leaves a wife and 1-year-old son. Family has said Shinners loved his family and his job.

Shinners’ funeral is expected to begin at 11 a.m. at the UCCU Center, located at 800 W. University Parkway in Orem.

A procession will follow flag-lined streets through Provo, from the arena to Interstate 15 to Provo’s Center Street, University Avenue, again on I-15, then to 200 South in Springville. Shinners will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Springville.
