Fallen Provo officer to be laid to rest Saturday; suspect’s family expresses condolence

PROVO — The funeral for fallen Provo police officer Joseph Shinners will be held Saturday.

The funeral is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Utah Valley University UCCU Event Center in Orem and will be streamed live on DeseretNews.com. From there, a funeral procession will take his body to Springville’s Evergreen Cemetery where he will be laid to rest. The procession will work its way through Provo and along University Avenue to reach the cemetery.

Shinners, 29, was shot and killed a week ago while trying to take a wanted fugitive into custody.

Matt Frank Hoover, 40, who is suspected of killing Shinners, remained in Utah Valley Hospital Friday being treated for a shooting injury. Police have not released how many times Hoover was shot or where on his body he was shot. But investigators have said his condition was not considered to be life-threatening and that he would be booked into jail once he is released from the hospital.

On Friday, Hoover’s family released a brief statement, their first public comments since the shooting.

“We, as extended family of Matt Hoover, are deeply saddened for his actions that took officer Joe Shinner’s life. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with his family. We strongly stand behind and extend our support to law enforcement and to the community who lost a brother, friend and all-around hero.”

When contacted by the Deseret News, Hoover’s sister-in-law said the family wanted to stick with their prepared statement and did not have additional comments. She also did not have any update on Hoover’s condition.
