Former Disney actor now faces federal charge in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — The case of a former Disney Channel actor charged in Salt Lake City with trying to entice a 13-year-old boy into having sex has now gone federal.

A federal grand jury on Wednesday returned an indictment charging Stoney Westmoreland, 48, of Los Angeles, with one count of coercion and enticement. A summons will be issued for him to appear in federal court in Salt Lake City, according to the U.S. Attorney for Utah’s office.

Westmoreland was previously charged in 3rd District Court with enticing a minor, a second-degree felony; four counts of dealing in harmful materials to a minor, a third-degree felony; and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, a third-degree felony.

On Dec. 13, Westmoreland attempted to meet with a 13-year-old boy and take him back to his room at the Little America Hotel, according to state court documents. The “boy,” however, was an undercover police officer.

Westmoreland was arrested after arriving at the location where he was expecting to meet the teen boy. Afterward, Salt Lake police served a search warrant on Westmoreland’s hotel room and seized “two sex novelty toys,” according to the warrant.

After his arrest, Westmoreland was fired from his role as the grandfather of the main character in the Disney show “Andi Mack,” which films in Salt Lake City. Westmoreland has also appeared in “Scandal” and “Breaking Bad.”

He was scheduled to make his initial appearance in 3rd District Court on Friday.

If convicted in federal court, he faces a minimum-mandatory sentence of 10 years in federal prison, and up to life.
